Embracing Large-Scale Commerce Innovation

Shopify has evolved from a platform for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to a robust solution suitable for large and very large enterprises. It offers a flexible commerce engine with a thriving ecosystem of third-party apps, providing extensive customization and integration capabilities.

Shopify’s purpose statement is to improve commerce for everyone so businesses can focus on what they do best: building and selling products. Initially targeting entrepreneurs, Shopify now caters to large enterprises by emphasizing speed, adaptability, and total cost of ownership – all points covered by its core offering, which helped establish its strong foothold in the market.

Strengths and Misconceptions:

  • Scalability: Shopify’s extensive user base and infrastructure support large enterprises, debunking the myth that it is only suitable for SMBs.

  • Customization vs. Configuration: Contrary to the belief of limited customization, Shopify allows for extensive modifications and integrations, including the ability to build custom applications that are very well integrated into the core platform. In addition, its headless stack allows for very flexible content management capabilities.

  • Features for B2B: Shopify provides robust features for B2B operations; furthermore, due to new global Fortune 100 clients (very complex international B2B environments), the Shopify product team has made significant investments to ensure their needs are met and benefit all enterprise brands on their platform.

  • Integration Capabilities: Major integrations are supported, with the ability to build out any integrations your company desires as a custom application safely hosted on Shopify’s infrastructure.

  • Security: World-class and resilient security practices within international standards and a solid commitment to governance.

As Shopify continues to move upmarket, it faces competition from established incumbents. However, innovative leaders in large enterprises are rethinking their technology stacks, recognizing Shopify’s potential to offer faster and cheaper commerce experiences while meeting their scalability needs. The unification of siloed commerce stores has also become a common theme that has accelerated the shift and focus to a single commerce core or engine, to serve customers better regardless of how they transact with the business.

Consumer behaviors from B2C are increasingly influencing B2B markets. Having dominated the B2C space, Shopify is well-positioned to lead in B2B by offering a cost-effective, flexible solution that enables rapid market entry. Although many of the customer journeys are different from traditional B2C experiences, the overall takeaway is that we must always take the initiative to consider the customer and employee journey to eliminate the pain where we can, putting the “human experience” at the core of any initiative should come before any technology discussions to achieve the best outcomes.

Shopify has stepped up its enterprise game over the last couple of years as a challenger platform, gaining much traction with extensive enterprise customers. The coming year will be the defining moment to see if Shopify’s platform can break the chasm and become more mainstream with large enterprise customers. We hope they continue to make the same strides and investments with the amazing attitude and energy we have seen these last couple of years. With over 3 million B2B businesses in the United States alone, generating trillions of dollars in revenue, the sector is both vast and highly competitive. B2B companies, which provide essential products and services to other enterprises, are crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of their clients.

The digital shift has propelled B2B eCommerce into the spotlight, with projections indicating that U.S. B2B eCommerce sales will surpass $2.3 trillion this year, presenting boundless opportunities for market share growth (Keenan, 2024).

With buyers’ habits evolving—more than half of B2B buyers now make purchases daily—it is crucial for businesses to stay relevant and adapt to these changes (Keenan, 2024). This article explores the top B2B eCommerce trends for 2024, offering insights to help businesses thrive in this rapidly changing environment.

Trend #1: Social Commerce

The popularity of virtual product demonstrations is steadily increasing in the B2B ecommerce sector. A recent survey revealed that 70% of professionals made purchases after experiencing a presentation in the metaverse or via virtual reality. Additionally, 21% expressed interest in trying virtual demonstrations despite having not yet experienced them (Keenan, 2024).

While social commerce has traditionally been associated with B2C marketing, B2B brands are increasingly leveraging this strategy. The global social commerce market is projected to reach $8.5 trillion by 2030, highlighting its growing importance (Oleksandra, n.d.). B2B companies are discovering that their target audience actively searches for products on social media platforms. In fact, Gartner reports that B2B buyers value third-party interactions 1.4 times more than direct digital supplier interactions (Keenan, 2024).

B2B buyers utilize social media in various ways throughout the purchasing process:

  • Researching different solutions and identifying unique needs early in the sales cycle
  • Comparing solutions
  • Gathering crucial information about potential solutions before making a purchase

Choosing the right social media platforms is key to successfully implementing a social commerce strategy. It is essential to identify which platforms are most relevant to your audience and conducive to engaging with your product offerings. Experimenting with different types of posts, such as product demo videos or customer testimonials, can help determine what resonates best with your target audience.

Once you’re ready to embrace social commerce tools, adding product catalogs to each platform can make it easier for potential customers to browse your inventory (Oleksandra, n.d.).

Order fulfillment and tracking have become top priorities in B2B ecommerce. A 2023 survey revealed that nearly 66% of B2B buyers find these aspects increasingly challenging (Keenan, 2024). Despite these difficulties, customer expectations for faster delivery times are rising: 41% of global shoppers expect to receive their online purchases within 24 hours, and 24% want their orders delivered in less than 2 hours. This demand for speed is pushing B2B companies to optimize for quicker delivery.

Leveraging third-party logistics (3PL) providers can help B2B brands meet these expectations by streamlining the fulfillment process and reducing costs. Additionally, early planning for peak seasons and diversifying suppliers can mitigate supply chain disruptions.

Enhancing the user experience involves implementing self-service portals, allowing customers to interact with the company, check order statuses, and book appointments in a closed environment. Starting with a minimum viable product (MVP) and gradually adding features based on customer feedback can ensure the portal meets their needs. B2B marketplaces are becoming essential for sales, currently representing 12% of all U.S. B2B ecommerce transactions (Keenan, 2024). This growth is driven by changing buyer preferences. Five years ago, there were only 75 B2B marketplaces; now, forecasts suggest this number could increase to 750 by 2025.

The 2023 B2B Marketplace 500 Report by Digital Commerce indicates that 60% of businesses have integrated B2B marketplaces, with buyers completing around 25% of their purchases on these platforms. Both company-owned and third-party marketplaces are significant business hubs, with an 8% rise in the use of company-owned marketplaces observed last year. Furthermore, 40% of leading companies utilize third-party marketplaces, compared to just 27% of less successful firms.

Many companies either run their own marketplace or have plans to create one. Top performers often excel in sector-specific marketplaces. Globally, 88% of businesses sell through platforms like Amazon, with this figure rising to 97% in India and 93% in the U.S. Industries such as consumer goods and retail (92%) and technology, media, and telecom (90%) dominate these third-party spaces.

Regions like Brazil, India, Western Europe, and East Asia offer significant opportunities for B2B marketplaces. Early adopters in these areas can gain a competitive advantage by tailoring their strategies to each platform, offering unique products, and running targeted experiments.

Trend #4: Customers Will Embrace Self-Service

Self-service portals have become a crucial expectation for B2B buyers. In 2023, nearly all buyers preferred to manage their own buying experience, a significant increase from 87% in 2021. Vendor sales reps, previously not a top source, became the second-most preferred information source in 2023 (Keenan, 2024).

Self-service commerce streamlines the buying process and can include subscriptions, AI-assisted interactions, customer communities, help centers, and customer portals. These tools reduce the need for manual sales interventions and enhance transaction accuracy, thereby shortening sales cycles and expanding market reach.

Headless commerce is gaining traction, with $1.65 billion invested in headless technologies in 2020-2021. About 74% of organizations believe that not adopting modern commerce solutions can negatively impact their business (Keenan, 2024). In 2023, 83% of buyers preferred digital commerce, and 72% were open to purchasing across multiple channels. Successful B2B companies introduce new channels and experiment to find the most effective sales avenues. Modern buyers use various digital technologies, including mobile apps and social media, to evaluate suppliers.

To stay competitive, businesses must excel in multiple channels and continuously reassess their performance. An omnichannel strategy is crucial, especially during uncertain economic times, as a poor customer experience can lead to lost sales.

This approach helps vendors remain competitive and maximize margins by offering timely discounts and adjusting prices on slow-selling items to clear inventory. Dynamic pricing isn’t just reactive; it’s a proactive strategy to shape buyer behavior and meet their demands for competitive pricing and efficiency.

What is Change Management?

Change Management is the coordinated approach to applying systematic procedures to manage the humans within an organization to move from the current state to a future desired state, utilizing a clear structured framework, which includes three major phases; preparation, implementation and follow-though.

The practice of Change Management is derived from theories from the fields of Psychology, Behavioural Science, Engineering, and Systems Thinking, focusing on how best to help people engage, adopt and to sustain changes long term.

Change Management refers to adjustments within business operations, for example:”

  • Technology upgrades
  • Restructuring teams or departments
  • Product Offering  
  • Economic Change
  • Entering new markets

Changes are inevitable, they enable businesses to scale, sustain viability and competitiveness. Changes in business operations historically have been approached by deciding to make a change and then defining success by measuring if the prescribed delivery schedule, budget, technical specs and business objectives were met, while the human component of the change was often minimized.   This minimalization of the people side of change often leads to change initiatives failing or in sub optimal outcomes.

Types of Organizational Changes:

Adaptive Changes – Typically small, incremental changes adopted to address needs that evolve over time they are often based on the current state.  These changes are generally minor adjustments to improve the existing way of working.  Example:  Upgrading a computer operating system eg. New version of windows.

Transformational Changes – Are of a larger scale and scope, they often involve concurrent shifts in future state with numerous elements of the business including changes in mission and strategy, company or team structure, or processes. Transformational changes typically require a substantial amount of time and effort to execute.  Example:  A traditional brick and mortar store implementing of an ecommerce site to grow their business.

Regardless of the type of change, it is important that each change initiative must be tailored to the unique challenges, deliverables and people involved, as no two scenarios are completely the same.

Failure to proactively manage the people quotient of change, may not only adversely affect morale and productivity it can ultimately hinder the ability to successfully affect the change and achieve business objectives.

As humans, we are generally reluctant to change due to uncertainty, insecurity, or just being comfortable with the status quo.  Change is often perceived as “bad” or “negative” and therefore is often considered as a threating force.  By utilizing a clear structured Change Management framework, organizations can proactively manage and alter the negative preconceptions, to ensure their employees or other parties impacted by change will experience a positive change journey resulting in sustained long term adoption.

Change management is an essential component in today’s agile business operations.  According to Harvard Business Review* about three-quarters of change efforts either fail to deliver the anticipated benefits or are abandoned entirely.”

As illustrated above, unstructured, or traditional approaches to Change initiatives often fail or do not achieve full the intended outcome as they do not fully embrace the importance of human acceptance of the change. Thereby the approach to change must be intentional, strategic, and well-coordinated with the understanding that the human component is a critical element in a successful change initiative.  From the start of a change initiative, a full and thoughtful assessment of how the change may impact your teams should be undertaken to proactively identify any potential resistance. This will allow you to customize your communications addressing resistance before it arises.  Communication must start as early as possible in the process and be conveyed clearly, concisely with transparency so that employees are engaged and understand how the change will affect them and their responsibilities. The communication should be two way and include active listening to avoid misunderstanding and to address the discomforts that come with change, such as fear and anxiety.  

In summation, Change Management is a framework for managing the people side of change. In todays tumultuous and ever-changing environment, business must adjust priorities, pivot, and adopt new processes more frequently than ever before.  These adjustments can be highly disruptive to people within an organization, therefore any business that wants to be nimble and able to make changes quickly and successfully should adopt change management as a core competency within their organization.
